The annual Family camp for Gateway took place early July, on Burleigh Hill Farm St Ives. There were around thirty families taking place, with beavers, cubs, and scouts from both Gateway and 2nd St Ives. Friday night, after flag, the group was split into four team and took part in an incident hike. The incidents were based on the five senses with each team scoring points along the way. Saturday, the days events were based around conservation, teaching the children to respect the environment and to make them aware of the struggle many people have to go through to get basic commodities like water. The team took part in a range of activities on this theme: An obstacle course was set up, with teams having to carry and then filter water. Teams were timed with points awarded for team work, and completing the task. Pete Carter, star of Country Wide, talked to the children about making wicker fences and catching eels. With the Olympics taking place later, the children and parents put their skills to the test in a series of challenging events. A nature activity making the children aware of their environment, by collecting insects. The traditional campfire took place in the evening, with both the children and their parents keen to demonstate their many talents. |
